Avoid Common Summer Home Maintenance Mistakes

The summer heat can make you want to spend the days curled up in a hammock or partaking in other fun outdoor activities. Apart from indulging in fun and relaxation, however, ensure you’re making the most of the season by staying on top of home maintenance.

Colonial Remodeling, LLC, a trusted provider of home remodeling services, lists five home maintenance mistakes that homeowners usually commit in the summer.

1. Neglecting the Roof

Summer can occasionally bring strong storms to the area. After bad weather hits your neighborhood, you need to inspect your roof for damage. Don’t just take a cursory look at your roof and assume all is well if you don’t notice any obvious damage, as there could still be damage to the underlying components of the roof. Contact a professional for a thorough inspection.

2. Forgetting the Siding

Dirt, pollen and mold can accumulate on your siding during the summer months. Keep an eye out for any buildup or damage. This will help you avoid shelling out for a new siding installation prematurely.

3. Failing to Check the Gutters

Make sure your gutters are clear of debris such as leaves, twigs and dirt. This can cause clogs that prevent your gutters from draining water away from your home, increasing the risk of water damage.

4. Overlooking the HVAC Filter

Check your HVAC filter at least once a month to ensure your air conditioner runs smoothly. A dirty filter can keep your unit from performing efficiently. If you want to keep your cooling costs low, clean the filter thoroughly or replace it if necessary.

5. Disregarding the Pavement

If you have cracked or crumbling concrete, you need to repair it in the summer. You’ll have a more satisfactory result during this season than in winter.
