Green Energy, Tax Credits, and Energy Efficiency This 2016

Over the years, several breakthroughs in clean energy technology have given us more options such as solar and wind power. Their emergence couldn’t be timelier, as one pressing concern for many homeowners today is finding ways to achieve lower utility bills. The federal government itself is so concerned with energy consumption that it has encouraged homeowners to seek greater energy efficiency in their homes, with considerable incentives for those who do just that.

Let Colonial Remodeling, the leading siding contractor in Fairfax, VA, provide more details on these incentives:

Remodeling for Tax Credits
In December of 2015, the Consolidated Appropriations Act was passed during the 114th Congress. It extended tax credit grants to homeowners who are principal residents in existing homes, as opposed to new constructions and rentals. The following energy-efficient home improvement upgrades qualify for tax credits:

  • Roofs – Reroofing with metal or asphalt roofs that have the ENERGY STAR certification will earn you a 10% tax credit for purchases and improvements not including labor cost.
  • Windows, door, skylights – Installing ENERGY STAR certified products for 10% on costs – limit of $200.
  • Solar panels – These products are filed under the solar energy systems with solar heaters. Credit is to the amount of 30% without an upper limit, qualifies second homes and new construction, and lasts until 2019 with modifications on credit until 2021.
