Tips on Cedar Roof Maintenance

Cedar roofing is widely popular in the U.S. Much like other roofing materials, it has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on your specific needs, location and climate.

When properly maintained, a cedar roof can last for decades and add unique character and beauty to your home. Colonial Remodeling, LLC, a trusted roofing and siding contractor in your area, shares tips on how you can keep your cedar shingles and shakes in top condition.

1. Regular Cleaning

Cleaning is the first and simplest step in maintenance. Remove twigs, dead leaves and other debris that could trap moisture against the cedar shingles. Also, check for loose or damaged shingles and have them repaired or replaced immediately to inhibit moisture infiltration. If you notice moss, algae or mildew, you can use a power washer to remove them, but set it at a pressure from 1,500 to 3,500 pounds per square inch. Check your siding for moss as well and don’t hesitate to ask an expert if siding replacement would be necessary.

Don’t forget to clean your gutters. Accumulated debris can result in clogged gutters, which could overflow with rainwater or melted snow. This allows water to seep under the shingles and cause damage.

2. Preventive Maintenance

Certain types of wood are naturally resistant to rot and decay, so you should invest in high-quality wood shingles at the outset. You can also install zinc, copper or galvanized flashing at the ridgetop and other roof angles to prevent leaks and moss growth.

3. Finishes

Coat the surface of your cedar shingles with the appropriate finish. This will protect the wood from moisture damage and keep your roof in good condition for years. You should never use any kind of waterproofing sealants, though. As a rule of thumb, avoid finishes that create a film around the wood as these tend to trap moisture and eventually cause rot.
