4 Ways to Prevent Hail and Storms From Causing Damage

Proper preparation and the right home remodeling projects can help reduce the risk of damage to your home from severe weather, including hailstorms. We recommend working with the right roofer, implementing a preventive maintenance program and, if needed, replacing your current roof with a more durable roofing system. Read on as Colonial Remodeling discusses four ways to prevent storm and hail damage:

  1. Know Who to Call: Research local roofers before a storm arrives so you will not be stressed about finding a trustworthy roofer in the midst of dealing with storm damage. Be aware that after a storm, unscrupulous contractors known as storm chasers go around and pressure homeowners into working with them. These storm chasers often perform substandard work. You will not need to worry about storm chasers if you already have a reliable local roofer to call.

  1. Implement a Preventive Roof Maintenance Program: As a hail damage repair expert, we strongly recommend scheduling regular roof maintenance throughout the year. Regular roof maintenance will prevent small problems from worsening after a storm. A preventive roof maintenance program will also improve your roof’s durability, extend its lifespan and keep it looking pristine.

  1. Keep Your Trees Trimmed: Strong winds can cause branches to break from trees and fall on your roof. This can cause your shingles to crack, exposing the vulnerable roof underlayment. Heavy rains can then cause the underlayment to deteriorate, allowing water to enter your home and damage your interior. You can reduce these risks by making sure there are no branches near your roof.

  1. Replace Your Roof If Necessary: If your roof is over 20-years old and has already suffered damage, then it may be more cost-effective to replace it rather than wait for the inevitable roof repairs after a storm. A new roof will provide you with better protection from bad weather. In addition, it can also greatly improve your home’s appearance. Replacing your roof with a better material, such as metal, can also save you from excessive repairs and maintenance in the long term.
