The Importance of Asphalt Shingle Grade and Wind Tolerance

Not all asphalt shingles are created equal. As your local CertainTeed roofer, we list a couple of traits in today’s post that your new asphalt shingles should have to minimize storm damage and ensure your home is well protected throughout the year.

Shingle Grade

Asphalt shingles come in three grades: 3-tab, architectural shingles, and luxury shingles. 3-tabs are your entry level choice and offer basic protection from the elements. While the protection offered by 3-tabs is decent, if you want to minimize yearly storm damage repair, we recommend choosing a higher shingle grade. CertainTeed’s Landmark Architectural Shingles are an ideal option. They’re engineered to outperform ordinary roofing shingles, providing superior protection even in extreme conditions.

Wind Tolerance

Most 3-tab asphalt shingles have respectable wind tolerances of up to 110 mph. If you live in a region prone to storms that bring extremely high winds, however, we recommend you look at architectural shingles with wind tolerances in the 120-130 mph range.

As a general rule, the higher the wind tolerance an asphalt shingle has, the heavier it is. This means your roofing system needs to be able to support more weight.
