Caring for Your Vinyl Siding: Tips and Tricks

Vinyl is one of the most popular and durable siding materials. To maximize your vinyl siding’s lifespan and enhance its beauty, routine maintenance is key. Today, Colonial Remodeling, LLC, a top roofing contractor in the state, shares some maintenance tips.

Use Laundry Soap and Warm Water

Vinyl siding is fade-resistant, but dirt and grime build-up can dull vinyl’s characteristic bright colors over time. Washing your vinyl siding can help bring back those colors.

Avoid using harsh chemical solutions. Instead, use laundry soap or trisodium phosphate substitute and wash the residue away with warm water. While washing the siding, point the hose downward to prevent water from entering the spaces between the slats and the openings in your roofing system’s underside. Doing so helps minimize the chance of mold growth.

Use a Pressure Washer

The water pressure from a hose might not be enough to remove stubborn dirt and grime. A pressure washer might, but be careful not to set the pressure too high, as it can damage the siding. When in doubt, it’s better to consult a qualified contractor.

Avoid Painting Your Siding Yourself

If you want to give your siding a fresh paint of coat, leave this project to an experienced professional for best results. Before a fresh coat of paint can be applied to vinyl siding, the surface of the siding has to be cleaned and coated with a primer. Simple mistakes such as not thoroughly cleaning the siding before painting over it can ruin its colors.

Trim Overgrown Shrubbery

Vinyl siding may be rot-resistant, but it’s still vulnerable to cracks, which can form on your siding when foliage grows against it. To prevent this from happening, trim plants and shrubs before they reach the siding.
