Siding: Repaint or Replace?

If your home looks like it desperately needs new siding, you’ve got two options: repaint or replace. Remodeling and storm damage repair contractor Colonial Remodeling, LLC discusses the differences between the two options.

Siding Repainting

The main benefit of siding repainting is that it costs a fraction of what a siding replacement project would be. The process is fairly simple: scrape and sand the old paint off, apply primer, then the outer coat of paint. Using compressed air and paint sprayer, or having a few people helping you out can help make the job easier.

While the cost can make it an attractive option, you have to consider that there are drawbacks to repainting your siding. Preparing the old siding for repainting can take a long time depending on the size of the house. In addition to paint, you will need to buy brushes and trays, or perhaps rent equipment that you don’t already have. In the event that you commit mistakes during painting, you will have to correct it yourself or spend more money on hiring a home remodeling contractor to perform corrections.

Siding Replacement

While it does cost more compared to doing it yourself, having your siding replaced addresses critical problems such as dry rot. It is also an opportunity to upgrade to siding that requires less maintenance, like vinyl. Or perhaps a high-performance type like fiber cement. Each material has its own set of features and benefits, along with a wide selection of colors, styles, and textures. It also lets you correct mistakes such as a mismatch with the existing roof. Or maybe you want siding that looks more faithful to the architectural style.

Choosing siding with low maintenance requirements eliminates the need to scrape and repaint your siding every few years. James Hardie® fiber cement siding, for instance, has a factory-applied coating that is warranted not to crack, peel, or flake during its life span, which is much longer than what it would have taken between repaintings. In fact, all you need to do to keep fiber cement and vinyl siding pristine is to wash it regularly.
