How Do Metal Roofs Stand Up to Hailstorms?

Metal roofing is becoming an increasingly popular for people tackling home remodeling. One question we frequently receive from customers who are considering investing in metal roofing is how the material stands up to hail. This is due to a misconception that metal roofs will easily become dented from hail impact.?

Metal Roof Toughness

Most metal roofs are made of tough alloys that have impact ratings of at least three or higher. These ratings are given by third parties and indicate that a material can withstand a major impact without a problem. This should give you confidence that your metal roof will be able to handle anything Mother Nature throws at it.

Choose a High-Quality Metal Roof

That said, not all metal roofs are created equal. For example, metal panels can withstand impact better than metal shingles can, due to their structure. The impact is spread out throughout the panel, which lessens the severity, meaning there is a smaller chance of needing hail damage repair.

On any metal roof, areas where edges meet are the most vulnerable. Damage to these areas can create openings that can invite leaks and moisture to enter the roof structure, which can be bad for the structure underneath the rooftop. Fortunately, being proactive about roof maintenance allows you to identify weaknesses in your roof and have them repaired before more serious damage can occur.

Cosmetic Concern

In some cases, an extremely strong impact from hail could leave a dent on even a high-quality metal roof. Usually, this is just a cosmetic issue as opposed to a more serious problem requiring extensive storm damage repair. Nevertheless, it’s always smart to have your roof inspected by an experienced professional after a bad storm hits your neighborhood.
