Things to Prepare

Luckily, you don’t need specialized equipment or a lot of tools to replace the sash. Here are the items you should prepare before starting the project:

1. Tape (for replacing sash that’s broken)

2. Flathead screwdriver

3. Phillips head screwdriver or a drill

4. Container for the screws or a tool belt (will help you avoid dropping the screws on the floor or losing them)

Procedure

Like all home remodeling projects, always put safety first. Have someone else stand on the outside to support the window as you remove the sash.

Next, follow these steps:

1. Crank the window most of the way.

2. Take off the operator arm using a flathead screwdriver.

3. One end of the operator arm will still be attached. Crank the arm out of the way.

4. Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the hinge at the bottom by pushing the groove away from the pin.

5. Remove the hinge at the top using the same method for the bottom hinge.

6. Let the sash slide along the track until there’s an opening and it’s finally out.

7. Remove the hinge arms using a drill, and set the old sash on one side.

8. Screw the hinge arms to the new sash.

9. Position the sash at a slight angle, and fit it in the track.

10. Reattach the groove at the top and then at the bottom.

11. Reattach the operator arm. When you hear a snap, it means the arm is working.

12. Install the window screen.
