Your James Hardie® siding, along with your roof, is your home’s first line of defense against the elements. Underneath your siding, there is another layer that aids in this protection: house wrap. Many building codes require house wrap to be installed in homes, as it provides an additional barrier against moisture.
Here, Colonial Remodeling, LLC discusses the different kinds of house wrap you can install in your home.
-
Asphalt Felt – Asphalt felt house wrap is usually made of tar paper and is the most common option. The standard requirement for this house wrap is Type 1 felt that meets the ASTM D 226 standards.
-
Polyolefin Fibers – This kind of house wrap is a plastic material and is typically made of polyethylene or polypropylene fibers.
-
Grade D Building Paper – Grade D Building Paper house wrap is usually made of asphalt-impregnated kraft paper and is typically installed in homes that have stucco siding. For house wrap installation, turn to the James Hardie siding installation pros of Colonial Remodeling, LLC.
-
WRB Sheathing – WRB Sheathing is made of oriented strandboard (OSB). Oftentimes, the OSB has special coatings that can serve as both sheathing and WRB. When installed, all panel joints will have to be sealed with the manufacturer’s tape.
-
Rigid Foam – Some types of rigid foam insulation board can serve as a WRB house wrap as well if properly sealed.
-
Liquid WRB – Liquid WRB is a house wrap variant that’s composed of tar-like liquids and is often applied with a paint roller or spray equipment to serve as an air barrier.
